Opposition questions Antti Häkkänen’s Israel trip amid confidence-motion over defence deals

During a recent A-Studio broadcast, Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen and SDP’s Tytti Tuppurainen debated Finland’s stance on the Middle East. The opposition, led by National Coalition Party MPs, filed a confidence motion accusing the government of a biased Israel policy. The controversy stems from Häkkänen’s recent trip to Israel, which was linked to securing the Daavidin linko air-defence system approved under the Sanna Marin cabinet in 2023.
Tuppurainen criticised the minister for not meeting Palestinian representatives and questioned the necessity of the visit, a view rebuked by fellow coalition MPs who called the demand absurd. Häkkänen maintained that the sole purpose was to ensure the availability of vital defence equipment and to coordinate with European and non-European partners such as the United States, Israel and South Korea. The debate highlights growing political friction over Finland’s defence procurement and foreign-policy alignment.
