Opposition vows to rename Putrajaya Hospital after Hasmah if given power

Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin said Perikatan Nasional will rename the Putrajaya Hospital after Hasmah, former prime minister Mahathir's wife, if it wins a governing mandate.

In a parliamentary discussion of the 2027 budget, opposition chief Hamzah Zainudin announced that Perikatan Nasional would rename the Putrajaya Hospital after Hasmah, the late wife of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, should the coalition be granted governing authority. He supported a proposal from MP Mas Ermieyati Samsudin to honor Hasmah, who passed away at 100 at the National Heart Institute and was interred at Pusara Negara, Putrajaya.

Zainudin also urged the Tabung Haji board to revisit its RM15,000 minimum deposit rule for prospective pilgrims, arguing it burdens rural savers and could exclude current depositors. He raised concerns about the government's assistance to Urusharta Jamaah Sdn Bhd, emphasizing the opposition's role as a watchdog to ensure fair implementation of policies.

Why it matters

The proposal reflects political promises that could shape Malaysia's healthcare naming and Hajj financing policies.
