Opposition Wins Undermined as 156 Turkish Municipalities Shift to Government Control

An opposition lawmaker says the ruling AKP has taken over 156 municipalities since the March 2024 local elections through defections, trustees and judicial actions.

A study released by New Party lawmaker İbrahim Arslan, based on Supreme Election Council figures up to October 12, documents how the AKP has expanded its municipal authority after the March 2024 local elections. The report counts 106 mayors who joined the AKP after being elected under other banners, including 42 from the New Welfare Party and 36 from the CHP. Additionally, 13 municipalities were placed under government-appointed trustees and 11 experienced council reshuffles that enabled the ruling coalition to assume control, bringing the total of post-election AKP-run municipalities to 671.

The study highlights that 50 of the 411 municipalities originally won by the CHP have been overtaken, while ten trustee appointments affected DEM-won areas. Nine major metropolitan areas, including Istanbul and Izmir, were also targeted. Arslan attributes the shifts to pressure tactics such as threats, blackmail, and control over municipal funding, and urges opposition forces and voters to defend the election outcomes.
