Orange alert issued as up to 80 mm rain threatens floods and landslides in northern Norway

Authorities have issued an orange warning for heavy rain of up to 80 mm, raising flood and landslide risks in Troms and northern Nordland.

An orange-level warning has been issued for Troms and the northern part of Nordland due to an imminent threat of heavy precipitation and associated flood-landslide hazards. The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) highlighted the risk of soil and flood landslides in the region for the next few days. The Meteorological Institute predicts rain and occasional intense showers from night to Monday, with totals of 50-80 mm in valleys and possibly more in mountainous zones, while warm temperatures and strong winds will increase snow melt.

Multiple landslide events are anticipated, and road accessibility could deteriorate. Emergency services will continuously assess the need for protective measures, and the public is advised to keep ditches, culverts and other water pathways free of debris, ice, gravel, trash, branches and leaves to prevent water buildup that can trigger slides. A separate rain warning for the same areas was also released on Sunday.

Why it matters

Heavy rain could cause flooding and landslides, endangering lives and disrupting transport in northern Norway.
