Orange Order urges calm as two rival rallies loom in Portadown
The Orange Order district asked its supporters to stay peaceful ahead of two Saturday demonstrations in Portadown, while police warned of a major safety operation.
The Orange Order district at the heart of the Drumcree parade dispute urged its members to remain peaceful as the impasse reaches a second weekend, noting that it is considering its next steps. PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson echoed Chief Constable Jon Boutcher’s appeal for calm and announced a major public-safety operation in Portadown over the weekend. Two demonstrations are planned: Sinn Féin called on supporters of Garvaghy Road residents to rally at 3 pm, while a “Let Them Home Festival” supporting the Orangemen will run from 4 pm to 8 pm in Edgarstown.
The TUV criticised a protest song it called pro-IRA, and DUP figures warned that reckless behaviour could undermine law-and-order. Additional tensions surfaced over a mistakenly signed letter involving Kyle Paisley and remarks from DUP leader and Trevor Clarke about possible “one-and-done” parade arrangements.
Why it matters
