Orange Peel Waste Triggers Massive Forest Recovery and Biodiversity Boost in Costa Rica
A 1998 experiment that spread 12,000 tonnes of orange peel waste on a degraded Costa Rican pasture produced a forest with three times more tree species and 176% higher above-ground biomass after 16 years.
In the late 1990s, orange juice producer Del Oro teamed with ecologists Daniel Janzen and Winnie Hallwachs to deposit roughly 12,000 metric tonnes of orange peel and pulp onto a severely degraded pasture inside Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Conservation Area. After a legal battle with rival TicoFruit that left the site largely ignored for about 15 years, Princeton researchers Timothy Treuer and Jonathan Choi revisited the area in 2013 and contrasted it with neighboring untreated grassland.
Soil tests showed higher nutrient levels, while vegetation surveys recorded a 176% rise in above-ground biomass and about two dozen tree species, compared with a single-species dominance nearby. The restored plot now supports wildlife, including a tayra and a three-foot-diameter fig tree. Their findings, published in Restoration Ecology, suggest that agricultural waste can simultaneously address waste disposal and carbon sequestration, though the authors warn against indiscriminate dumping.
