Orange weather alert issued for Gard and Hérault as heavy rain and hail approach

Météo-France will place Gard and Hérault under orange vigilance for rain and flooding from 14:00 on Monday, with the threat of intense showers, hail and strong winds.

Météo-France announced that, beginning at 14:00 on Monday, the departments of Gard and Hérault will move to orange vigilance for rain and flooding due to an incoming Mediterranean episode. Forecasters expect morning rain followed by stronger thunderstorms in the afternoon, with potential rainfall rates of 70 mm per hour, wind gusts up to 80 km/h and hail, and they do not rule out tornado-like phenomena. Cumulative precipitation across the event could total 200-250 mm, possibly reaching 300 mm locally, prompting a possible shift to red alert if conditions worsen.

Neighboring departments—Bouches-du-Rhône, Lozère, Ardèche and Vaucluse—currently on yellow alert may have their status raised depending on the weather’s evolution. The system is associated with the cold drop “Adam” affecting Spain, where torrential rains have already caused a fatality near Barcelona. The orange alert is expected to remain in force until 15:00 on Tuesday.

Why it matters

Severe rain and hail could cause flooding, property damage and safety risks for residents in southern France.
