Oslo City Council proposes names for eight new boroughs

Oslo's city council today released its definitive proposal for naming the eight new boroughs created by the upcoming administrative reform. The suggested names combine traditional Oslo place names that have never served as borough titles with extensions of current district names, aiming to reflect the city’s history, geography and identity. Council member Oluf Ulseth highlighted that the naming process involved a broad public consultation, with an open input round in spring 2026 and a summer public hearing of three options per district.

More than 2,300 comments were received, and the council says the final list balances legal criteria, language council advice and the varied feedback. The new boroughs will be established once the city council approves the plan.
