Oslo Labour Party narrows mayoral candidates to Lund and Mushtaq
The Oslo Arbeiderparti nomination committee has put forward Marthe Scharning Lund and Usman Mushtaq as its two possible candidates for the city’s chief executive role, leaving the final choice to local party branches.
Oslo Arbeiderparti’s nomination committee identified Marthe Scharning Lund and Usman Mushtaq as the party’s potential candidates for the city’s chief executive position, but deferred the decision of who will top the ballot to the local party chapters. The mayoral slot has been given to Abdullah Alsabeehg, and party rules mandate that the mayor and chief executive candidates be of different genders, meaning a female mayoral candidate would be needed if Mushtaq is chosen.
Party members will later decide on the final candidate list for the municipal election. The news prompted comments, with Eivor Evenrud noting her unexpected 19th-place ranking. In Oslo Venstre, the nomination committee placed finance councilor Hallstein Bjercke first, Marit Vea second, and moved veteran Ola Elvestuen to the eighth spot.
Why it matters
The candidate selection will shape Oslo's leadership and affect Labour's prospects in the municipal election.
