Oslo Labour Party proposes raising Palestinian flag on city hall
The Oslo branch of the Labour Party plans to hoist a Palestinian flag on the city hall to mark the UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people, expecting support from left-wing parties.
Oslo’s Labour Party has submitted a proposal to fly a Palestinian flag on the municipal building as part of the UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people. Party officials argue that the city hall represents democratic values and should reflect solidarity with the Palestinian community, many of whom reside in Oslo. Abdullah Alsabeehg highlighted the city’s responsibility to signal support for a free Palestinian state and to denounce the ongoing violence in Gaza.
Marthe Scharning Lund echoed the call for a clear political stance. The party expects to secure a majority in the city council with votes from the Green Party, the Liberal Party and other left-wing factions, even though former mayor Eirik Lae Solberg had previously advised against such flag-raising.
Why it matters
The proposal signals Oslo’s political stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and tests coalition dynamics in the city council.
