Oslo schools adopt permanent anonymous written assessment for grades

Oslo municipality will make anonymous written grading a permanent practice for 10th-grade and high-school students after a successful trial.

Oslo's education authority is moving to institutionalise anonymous written grading for students in the 10th grade and upper secondary schools, building on a trial that involved eight schools last year. Julie Remen Midtgarden explained that the change seeks to promote fairness by focusing on what learners know, not who they are, and that the anonymous assessment will complement, not replace, teachers' judgments. Assessments are scheduled twice per year, and both students and teachers will have access to the feedback.

A simplified version will be introduced initially, with a broader rollout planned thereafter. The Education Agency will determine the subjects covered by the new system.

Why it matters

The policy aims to create a more equitable grading system for Norwegian secondary students.
