Otegi says EH Bildu sees no chance of ETA reviving armed violence

EH Bildu leader Arnaldo Otegi said the party does not consider a return to armed action by ETA, while awaiting more details on recent arrests in Irún.

Two individuals linked to dissident sectors of the Basque nationalist left were arrested in Irún on accusations of terrorism, prompting a response from EH Bildu’s secretary-general Arnaldo Otegi. In a Radio Popular interview, Otegi said the party does not contemplate any revival of ETA’s armed activity and will wait for further police details before making a political assessment. He reminded listeners that it has been fifteen years since ETA declared an end to its violence and rejected any nostalgic longing for the Franco era.

Otegi credited the Basque left’s role in the Aiete peace conference that urged ETA to cease terrorism and noted that the political conflict remains, especially regarding the status of prisoners, deportees and refugees. He called for recognition of state-inflicted violence and torture while stressing that the peace process is still incomplete.
