Other Mommy Tops Box Office with $28M Debut as Social Reckoning Struggles
Rob Savage’s horror film Other Mommy opened in more than 3,200 North American theaters and is on track for a $28 million weekend, while Sony’s Facebook-focused thriller The Social Reckoning opened to about $6 million, falling short of studio forecasts.
Rob Savage’s horror entry Other Mommy, featuring Jessica Chastain as a malevolent closet presence, debuted across 3,200 North American screens and generated $12.6 million on Friday, setting up a $28 million weekend that exceeds Universal Pictures’ $20 million target for the $19 million-budget film. Audience reaction has been poor, with a D+ CinemaScore—the lowest since Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis—and a 19% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics like Richard Lawson called it visually appealing but narratively thin.
Meanwhile, Sony Pictures’ Facebook-themed drama The Social Reckoning, directed by Aaron Sorkin, opened in 2,606 venues, pulling $2.1 million on Friday and roughly $6 million for the weekend, missing the studio’s $7 million estimate. The $30 million production, starring Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong, follows a journalist’s investigation into the tech giant and holds a 54% critic score and 71% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Additional releases this weekend include Chris Rock’s limited-run Misty Green, Alex Gibney’s Musk documentary, and the documentary NAZA, while a protest organized by the Israeli-American Council took place outside the Laemmle NoHo 7 theater in North Hollywood.
