Ottawa Council Approves Renaming of Trump Avenue Amid Ongoing US-Canada Tensions

At a September 9 meeting, Ottawa city council voted to strip the name Trump Avenue, a designation given over 20 years ago to honor former U.S. President Donald Trump. River Ward councillor Riley Brockington argued that Trump's repeated threats toward Canada disqualify him from such recognition. The motion was adopted without any recorded dissent.

Brockington will now oversee a public consultation and form a working group to consider alternatives, with the intention of retaining the Central Park neighbourhood's New York-city street-name theme. The council hopes to present a new name for approval by the following council session, scheduled for April, May or June. The decision follows a backdrop of trade disputes, including tariffs imposed by Trump and reciprocal Canadian measures.
