Over 1,800 Tradespeople Now Building Pennsylvania’s Largest Natural-Gas Power Campus

Homer City Generation reports that a workforce of over 1,800 union tradespeople and skilled contractors is now active at its natural-gas-powered energy campus, the nation’s largest under construction. The labor force draws from nine local unions, with roughly 95 % of workers residing in the area and more than 135 apprentices receiving on-the-job training. Company officials anticipate the crew to grow to 2,000 by the start of the new year, and the overall project is expected to generate more than 10,000 construction jobs and about 1,000 permanent roles.

Union leaders such as Shawn Steffee and Ben Steinmeyer highlighted the opportunity for local families and the preservation of apprenticeship pipelines. State officials, including Joe Pittman and Jim Struzzi, called the hiring curve a model for Pennsylvania’s economic growth. The plant, slated for up to 4.4 GW capacity with seven GE Vernova turbines powered by Marcellus gas from EQT, aims to be operational by 2027 and has so far recorded zero OSHA-recordable incidents.
