Over £1 million seized from two Essex drug dealers after EncroChat bust

Two convicted Essex drug traffickers had assets exceeding £1 million confiscated following a police operation that exploited the EncroChat network.

Simon Renoldi, 55, and Iain Green, 56, were convicted of coordinating extensive cocaine, ecstasy and cannabis shipments across Essex using the encrypted platform EncroChat during 2020-21. After their arrests in mid-2021, a specialist team from the Serious Organised Crime Unit launched a financial probe under the Proceeds of Crime Act, uncovering more than £1 million in cash and assets, including nearly £75,000 in cash seized across multiple warrants.

Authorities confiscated £430,330.41 from Renoldi and £609,417.67 from Green. The seized funds will be distributed among His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service, the Crown Prosecution Service, the Home Office, Essex Police and the Essex Community Foundation. Financial Investigator Mark Finbow said the seizure ensures criminals receive no benefit from illicit gains and helps fund crime-prevention efforts in the community.

Why it matters

The seizure strips drug traffickers of illegal profits and redirects funds to public services and crime-prevention initiatives.
