Over 2,000 Palestinian minors detained by Israeli forces since October 2023

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society reports that Israeli authorities have held more than 2,000 Palestinian children since October 2023, with at least 350 currently in harsh prison conditions.

A recent study by the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society indicates that Israeli security forces have detained more than 2,000 Palestinian children since the war began in October 2023. At present, roughly 350 minors are said to be suffering under harsh prison conditions, with reports of intimidation, torture, starvation, and denial of medical care. The document cites a recent sweep in Hebron that resulted in the arrest of six children, while acknowledging that the true number of detained youths in Gaza is unknown because of mass disappearances.

Specific cases highlighted include 15-year-old Mohammed Hamid, who contracted scabies in Ofer Prison, required heart surgery, and ultimately lost a leg, and 17-year-old Walid Ahmed, who died after six months in Megiddo Prison despite an investigation that could not determine a definitive cause of death. The report also mentions several American teenagers held without charge, such as Mohammed Ibrahim, Abdalkareem Issa Ahmed Safi, and Adam Wajeh Abdelfattah Karakrah. The society urges the international community to act decisively to secure the release of arbitrarily detained children and to investigate alleged torture and neglect.

Why it matters

The mass detention of children raises serious human-rights concerns and could fuel further instability in the region.
