Over 200 Migrants Rescued in Four Separate Sea Operations Near Crete

More than 200 migrants were saved on Friday morning in four coordinated rescues south of Crete and Gavdos, aided by drones and coast guard vessels.

On the morning of Friday, October 9, four separate rescue actions were carried out in the waters south of Crete and Gavdos, saving at least 205 migrants. FRONTEX's unmanned aerial assets first detected the boats, enabling Hellenic Coast Guard patrol vessels to move in. Two operations near Gavdos recovered a total of 102 migrants, who were transported to the port of Palaiochora in Chania.

A third vessel carrying 60 migrants was also located in the same sea area and brought to Palaiochora. Earlier that day, two other rescues retrieved about 103 migrants, one 50 nautical miles southeast of Kali Limenes and another 24 nautical miles southwest of Ierapetra. All four missions benefited from good weather, facilitating the coordinated effort.

Why it matters

The rescues highlight ongoing migration pressures in the Mediterranean and the role of coordinated European and Greek efforts.
