Over 23,000 TUI members begin work stoppage amid ongoing pay dispute

More than 23,000 members of the Teachers’ Union of Ireland have started industrial action, refusing after-hours communications and preparing for strikes later this week.

Today, over 23,000 teachers represented by the Teachers’ Union of Ireland commenced a new phase of industrial action, halting responses to work-related communications beyond contracted hours and opting out of Croke Park hours in schools. The union also confirmed that full-scale strike days are set for 14 October and 21 October. President Anthony Quinn described the move as inevitable after the expiry of the previous pay agreement and rising living costs.

General secretary Michael Gillespie appealed to the government for urgent, meaningful negotiations. Minister James Lawless responded on RTÉ’s The Week in Politics, noting the €1.2 billion allocated for public-sector wages in Budget 2027 and urging union leaders to return to the table.

Why it matters

The action highlights growing tension over public-sector pay and could affect education services across Ireland.
