Over 400 Indian diaspora scholars denounce anti-Election Commission protests
More than 400 Indian-origin students, researchers and alumni from universities in 27 countries issued a joint statement condemning recent protests against the Election Commission of India.
A coalition of over 400 Indian-origin academics and alumni, representing institutions across 27 nations, released a joint declaration titled “Spare India from Anarchy.” The document criticises current protests targeting the Election Commission of India, describing them as a calculated effort to sow doubt about the country’s democratic framework by leveraging ongoing legal cases and mobilising anarchist elements. The signatories highlighted India’s historical democratic stability, noting the effective functioning of checks and balances and peaceful power transitions since independence.
They expressed concern over a surge in election denial, challenges to judicial independence, and the politicisation of the armed forces. While acknowledging the role of dissent, the group urged political and social actors to resolve disagreements through constitutional debate, discussion and dialogue. The statement clarified that the listed academic affiliations do not constitute endorsements by the respective universities.
Why it matters
The declaration reflects international academic concern over political unrest that could affect India’s democratic credibility.
