Over 50 Niger security personnel killed in two separate jihadist assaults
More than 50 members of Niger's security forces died in two attacks in the country's west, according to security sources.
Security officials reported that a convoy of gendarmes was ambushed near Abala-Filingué, and a later strike in Birni-N'Konni resulted in more than 30 soldiers being killed. The attacks, attributed to jihadist militants, prompted the West African branch of Islamic State, known as Islamic State Sahel Province, to issue statements claiming responsibility. The group has previously hit Niamey's civilian airport and military airbase, underscoring challenges faced by the military-led government that seized power in a 2023 coup.
Recent mutinies, including an assault on the airport and presidential palace, have involved forces backed by the Kremlin-controlled Africa Corps. Security analysts say frontline units are increasingly demoralized after repeated insurgent defeats in the west.
Why it matters
The killings highlight escalating jihadist violence and mounting instability in Niger's western region.
