Over 700 Three-Year-Olds in Kelantan Flagged for Nutritional and Immunisation Concerns

Health officials in Kelantan reported that 769 of 2,688 screened three-year-olds have issues such as underweight, stunting, incomplete immunisation or lack of exclusive breastfeeding.

During the launch of the 2026 state-level Wellness Month carnival and Children’s Health Day, Kelantan health authorities disclosed that 769 out of 2,688 three-year-old children screened across ten districts show health concerns. The breakdown includes 9.8% underweight, 10.9% stunted, 0.3% not fully immunised and 9.6% who were not exclusively breastfed. Dr Kasuadi Hussin explained that underweight can stem from insufficient food, calorie deficits and junk-food consumption, while stunting may be linked to genetics, nutrition and socio-economic factors, especially among the Orang Asli community.

The screening aims to map these gaps to enable focused clinical and community interventions. Parents were urged to bring children for regular health visits until they reach six or seven years old, before entering primary school, to catch and treat problems early.

Why it matters

Early identification of child health issues enables timely interventions that can improve long-term wellbeing.
