Over 80% of Tabung Haji depositors lack the RM15,000 savings needed for queue eligibility

More than four million registered Tabung Haji depositors have saved less than the RM15,000 minimum required to keep their pilgrimage queue positions after the transition period ends.

Lembaga Tabung Haji disclosed that more than 80% of the 4.1 million individuals who have registered for the haj queue have not yet accumulated the RM15,000 minimum needed to preserve their positions after the transition period ends. The same data show that 53% of all 9.8 million Tabung Haji account holders have balances under RM1,300, underscoring a disparity between holding a queue slot and being financially ready. The agency explained that the RM15,000 benchmark reflects basic financial readiness for the B40 group, not overall wealth.

Depositors who registered for haj are given a transition window extending to 31 December 2028 to gradually increase their savings. Starting 1 January 2029, those still below the threshold will face a restructuring of queue eligibility, losing the advantage of first-come, first-served status unless they meet the requirement.

Why it matters

The shortfall in savings could delay many pilgrims and strain the management of Malaysia's haj queue system.
