Over 850 Swedish pupils unaccounted for after summer break, survey shows
A recent Ekot survey of 190 municipalities reveals that at least 850 students have not returned to school after the summer holidays, with more than 90 municipalities reporting missing pupils.
The mapping conducted by Ekot gathered responses from 190 Swedish municipalities, uncovering that at least 850 children are absent from school following the summer break. Over 90 municipalities confirmed they have schools where pupils have not come back. Local authorities are attempting to reach the students' guardians, but many do not know the children's whereabouts. School chief Andreas Lundholm of Ljusnarsberg municipality emphasized the difficulty of assessing the children's environments without contact.
Why it matters
Missing schoolchildren raise concerns about child welfare and the ability of authorities to protect and locate vulnerable youths.
