Over a third of Indians projected unable to afford a healthy diet by 2025

A KPMG report estimates that roughly 35% of India's population will lack the means to purchase a nutritious diet in 2025.

KPMG India's new report warns that about 35% of the country's residents may be unable to afford a balanced diet by 2025, despite overall food production surpassing dietary requirements by roughly a third. Current per-capita intake is still about one-fifth lower than recommended levels. The analysis points to inadequate storage and logistics, citing a shortfall of 10-15 million metric tonnes in cold-storage capacity and notable post-harvest losses for fruits and vegetables.

Regional disparities are evident, with Uttar Pradesh holding over a third of the nation’s cold-storage facilities while many northeastern and hill states have very few. The report calls for a focus on productivity, system efficiency, supply-chain excellence, transparency, technology, and sustainability to bridge the nutrition gap.

Why it matters

Ensuring affordable nutrition is crucial for public health and social stability in a country where many cannot meet dietary needs.
