Over one in five Swiss renters spend more than a third of their income on housing
A August 2026 survey by Comparis found that 16% of Swiss adults, and 22% of renters, allocate over one-third of their gross earnings to housing costs.
The poll, conducted with 1,038 respondents, shows that a significant share of households are burdened by rent and mortgage payments. Among tenants, more than one in five exceed the traditional one-third income threshold. Housing experts warn that those consistently over this limit may have to cut back on essential expenses such as health care or retirement savings. Harry Büsser, a real-estate specialist with Comparis, highlighted the growing difficulty of meeting the rule used by landlords to assess financial capacity.
Why it matters
Rising housing costs force many Swiss renters to cut back on essential spending, affecting overall household financial stability.
