Overdose Deaths Fall as Trump Administration Expands Treatment and Prevention Measures

U.S. overdose fatalities dropped 26.2% from 2023 to 2024, with provisional CDC data showing a further decline for the 12-month period ending March 2026.

Provisional CDC data reveal that overdose deaths fell 26.2% between 2023 and 2024, and the 12-month period ending in March 2026 recorded 67,798 fatalities, marking a continued decline. The Trump administration credits expanded access to over-the-counter naloxone nasal sprays approved in 2023 and again in June 2026, alongside broader distribution through pharmacies, schools, and emergency services. Federal investments through SAMHSA included roughly $1.5 billion in State Opioid Response grants and additional billions for tribal and community programs in 2025 and 2026.

Treasury actions have imposed sanctions on entities involved in fentanyl precursor chemicals, aiming to choke the illicit supply. The administration also emphasizes integrating housing with evidence-based treatment to support long-term recovery. Nominee Dr. Timothy Westlake, an emergency physician with extensive policy experience, is slated to lead SAMHSA pending Senate confirmation.

Why it matters

The decline shows that expanded overdose-reversal tools and treatment funding can reduce drug-related deaths.
