Overheated Power Strip Identified as Cause of Fatal Riverdale Home Fire
Fire investigators determined that an overheated power strip sparked the blaze that killed a father and three children and injured several others in Riverdale.
Investigators have identified an overheated power strip as the origin of the deadly fire that struck a Riverdale home on the early morning of Oct. 1. The strip, plugged in beside the front door, obstructed the primary escape route and ignited, leading to a rapid spread of flames. Officials have ruled out arson in the investigation.
The tragedy resulted in the death of a father and three of his children; a mother and three other children were injured, and one of the injured children later succumbed to injuries. Community fundraising efforts have gathered more than $16,000 to support the Bird family. The Riverdale Fire Department confirmed these findings and continues to assist the family.
