Ozone layer shows steady recovery thanks to decades of global action
The World Meteorological Organization reports that the ozone layer has been improving since 2000 and may fully recover in coming decades.
According to the World Meteorological Organization, the ozone layer has been on a recovery trajectory for over twenty years, a trend linked to the 1987 Montreal Protocol’s phase-out of harmful chemicals. The protective shield that blocks dangerous ultraviolet radiation is gradually healing, especially over Antarctica. Scientists, however, continue to track regional differences, noting that UV levels have risen by as much as 20 percent in parts of Europe since the mid-1990s.
Why it matters
A healthier ozone layer reduces harmful UV exposure, protecting ecosystems and human health worldwide.
