Packers add veteran tight end Jonnu Smith to bolster depth amid injuries

Facing a shortage at tight end, the Green Bay Packers have brought in nine-year veteran Jonnu Smith, who earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2024 with Miami. His arrival comes as Luke Musgrave sits out with a neck injury and Tucker Kraft, back from a torn ACL, is expected to see reduced snaps early in the season. The Packers still have returning tight ends Josh Whyle and Drake Dabney, and they are evaluating practice-squad player Messiah Swinson for a roster spot.

Smith, 31, was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2017 and has also played for the New England Patriots, Atlanta, Miami and the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he posted 38 catches for 222 yards in 2025. Known more for his receiving than blocking, Smith has appeared in 17 games each of the past three seasons and has never missed a full season. His addition gives Green Bay a seasoned option as they navigate the current injury challenges.
