Padres second baseman Luis Rengifo slated for season-ending ACL surgery

The San Diego Padres announced that second baseman Luis Rengino will have surgery to repair a fully torn ACL in his right knee, which will conclude his season. Medical scans revealed the ligament was completely ruptured, a condition first misidentified as a simple sprain. The injury happened during the seventh inning of a 7-6 defeat to Tampa Bay, when Rengino threw across his body toward home plate and fell onto the infield dirt, requiring assistance to stand before being taken off on a medical cart.

The play unfolded as two Tampa Bay runners converged near third base and Cedric Mullins sprinted for home, while Rengino pursued Taylor Walls and went down immediately after the throw. Rengino, who was released by the Milwaukee Brewers on June 23 after hitting.205 in 57 games, had posted a.292 average with four homers in 38 appearances for the Padres.
