Padres sweep Cubs in Wild Card series, advance to NLDS against Brewers
San Diego defeated Chicago 4-1 in Game 2, completing a sweep of the NL Wild Card series and moving on to the NLDS.
The San Diego Padres completed a sweep of the Chicago Cubs in the NL Wild Card series with a 4-1 win at Petco Park, advancing to the National League Division Series. Michael King flirted with a no-hit bid in the first game, and the Padres’ bullpen, anchored by Bradgley Rodriguez, shut down Chicago’s high-scoring lineup. Gavin Sheets, coming off the bench, delivered a two-run homer that broke a 2-1 tie.
Chicago’s presumptive MVP Pete Crow-Armstrong went 0-for-7 in the series, and the Cubs scored only one run in 18 postseason innings. The Padres will now face the Milwaukee Brewers, who posted the league’s best regular-season record.
