Pakistan army warns of forceful response to any May-9 style unrest

Pakistan’s senior military leadership cautioned that any attempt to stir unrest resembling the May 9 protests will be met with decisive force, according to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations.

At a high-level gathering of corps commanders in Rawalpindi, senior army officials warned that any effort to create a "May 9-like" situation would be suppressed with decisive force and the rule of law. Field Marshal Asim Munir emphasized the importance of internal stability and a heightened state of readiness, praising recent counter-terrorism operations while urging a blend of kinetic actions and people-centric governance.

The statement called for dismantling terror-crime networks, enhancing police capabilities, and aligning with the National Action Plan and Vision Azm-i-Istehkam. It also condemned terrorism emanating from Afghanistan, holding the Taliban’s leadership responsible for alleged Indian involvement. The forum welcomed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia and Turkiye, expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia against Houthi attacks, and reiterated Pakistan’s stance on the Kashmir dispute in line with UN resolutions.

Why it matters

The warning signals Pakistan’s readiness to use force to prevent large-scale unrest and underscores its security posture toward regional threats.
