Pakistan lifts petrol price modestly while trimming diesel rate

The government raised petrol to Rs390.66 per litre and cut high-speed diesel to Rs399.34 per litre, effective Oct 2.

Effective Oct 2, the federal government increased the retail price of petrol by Rs3.26 to Rs390.66 per litre and reduced the price of high-speed diesel by Rs1.01 to Rs399.34 per litre. Both fuels continue to carry taxes of Rs114 per litre for petrol and Rs100 per litre for diesel. The adjustment follows a series of austerity measures introduced in response to rising global oil prices, such as earlier market closures at 9 pm and a 50 percent cut in fuel allocations for official vehicles for three months.

In September, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif unveiled a relief scheme aimed at motorcycle, auto and sub-800 cc vehicle owners, a program that Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said reflects a whole-of-government approach. The scheme has registered about 7.60 million users and seen 7.71 million tokens redeemed. Earlier, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that fuel prices would be set daily based on international market movements.
