Pakistan to launch nationwide fuel subsidy scheme at midnight on September 16
The government will activate a fuel relief program for two- and three-wheelers and vehicles up to 800 cc at 11:59 pm on September 16, offering Rs100 per litre subsidies.
The Prime Minister’s Fuel Relief Scheme, unveiled by Shehbaz Sharif, provides a Rs100 per litre discount to owners of motorcycles, rickshaws and vehicles up to 800 cc, with monthly limits of 20 litres for two- and three-wheelers and 30 litres for larger cars. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar chaired a meeting that confirmed the program is operational in Islamabad and will be rolled out across the country at 11:59 pm on September 16.
The rollout includes a simple SMS registration system (text to 9771) and the deployment of volunteers from the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme for public outreach. Dar also instructed that fuel stations receive payments within 24 hours via the State Bank of Pakistan and that provincial authorities complete district-level outreach. The scheme comes amid rising fuel prices caused by Middle-East tensions affecting major oil routes, with retail petrol at Rs380.24 per litre and diesel at Rs409.42 per litre, plus existing taxes and duties.
Why it matters
The subsidy aims to ease fuel costs for millions of commuters as regional oil supply disruptions push prices higher.
