Pakistan trims petrol price while raising diesel rate amid new fuel austerity measures
The government lowered the retail price of petrol to Rs398.30 per litre and increased the price of high-speed diesel to Rs396.24 per litre, effective Oct 10.
Effective Oct 10, the government announced a new fuel price structure: petrol will be priced at Rs398.30 per litre after a reduction, and high-speed diesel will rise to Rs396.24 per litre. Both fuels continue to carry taxes of Rs114 per litre for petrol and Rs100 per litre for diesel. The adjustment follows a series of austerity steps, such as requiring markets to close by 9 pm and halving fuel allocations for official vehicles for a three-month period.
In September, the prime minister unveiled a relief scheme for motorcycles, autos and vehicles up to 800 cc to ease the impact of global oil price hikes. Earlier, the petroleum minister said fuel prices would be fixed daily based on international market trends, shifting from weekly revisions that began in March. These measures aim to curb consumption amid ongoing Middle-East tensions that have driven fuel price volatility.
Why it matters
Fuel price changes affect transport costs for millions and signal the government's response to global oil market volatility.
