Pakistan warns India's pause on Indus Water Treaty could set global water-governance precedent

At a gathering in Islamabad, Information Minister Atahullah Tarar warned that India’s decision to place the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance threatens to set a dangerous example for international water management. He reminded listeners that the treaty was unilaterally suspended by India in April of the previous year, an action that was followed by a short military confrontation in May 2025. Tarar emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to peace but insisted the country will not tolerate water being weaponised against its 240 million people.

He argued that bypassing established dispute-resolution mechanisms could reverberate across other trans-boundary water arrangements worldwide. The minister said Pakistan will continue to engage global partners to defend its vital water interests. Further developments are expected.
