Pakistani and Chinese troops launch high-altitude anti-terrorism drills in Xinjiang

Pakistani and Chinese forces began the Karakoram 2026 joint exercise in Xinjiang, focusing on counter-terrorism tactics at high altitude.

A joint Pakistani-Chinese military exercise named Karakoram 2026 opened on Wednesday at a base in Korla, Xinjiang, according to official Chinese military media. The ceremony marked the start of high-altitude anti-terrorism training, where Pakistani troops examined Chinese equipment and exchanged counter-terrorism expertise. Planned activities cover drone handling, on-the-move target acquisition, long-range sniping and live-force command drills.

China’s defence ministry press secretary highlighted the goal of strengthening joint response capabilities against terrorist threats. The drill follows a September patrolling exercise at Mantika Pass near the Khunjerab border and a May reaffirmation of enhanced military cooperation between the two nations.

Why it matters

The exercise shows deepening Pakistan-China security ties and joint readiness against terrorism in a strategically sensitive region.
