Paks Nuclear Plant Runs with Two Reduced-Output Units and One Fully Operational Block
Two units at the Paks nuclear power station are operating at reduced output while a third runs at full capacity, leaving the fourth unit offline for major repairs.
An operational incident caused one turbine-generator set in the first block to shut down for protective reasons, limiting its output. The second block has been working at a lower capacity since a scheduled maintenance program began. The fourth block remains out of service due to a planned major overhaul, so only the third block is delivering its full design power. Combined, the plant is generating just over 1,000 MW, roughly half of its nominal 2,000 MW capacity.
Why it matters
Reduced output at Hungary's largest nuclear plant affects national electricity supply and energy security.
