Palantir CTO argues existing laws can govern AI while urging industry-led safety measures

Shyam Sankar, Palantir’s chief technology officer, told Margaret Brennan that the tech sector must demonstrate AI’s economic benefits and that current regulations are largely sufficient, though some additional safeguards may be needed.

During an interview, Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar emphasized that the burden lies with the technology industry to showcase concrete economic gains from AI, countering public skepticism reflected in recent polls. He characterized the safety narrative as influenced by a niche "effective altruism" worldview, arguing that it obscures practical realities. Sankar asserted that the United States already possesses a robust legal heritage—such as product liability and regulatory regimes like the FDA—that can be applied to AI, though he acknowledged a need for a few marginal adjustments.

When asked about the AI-industry pledge signed by several firms, he clarified that Palantir was not invited because it does not develop its own models, though the company does implement safety controls for the models it deploys. Regarding the new AI czar’s 120-day policy review, Sankar expects it to leverage existing agencies and to establish clearer incident-response and reporting mechanisms. Throughout, he stressed human agency in shaping AI outcomes and warned against both alarmist doomsday predictions and unchecked commercial push.
