Palestinian detainee dies in Israeli prison after year of secret administrative detention

Moataz Nizam al-Atrash, 21, died in Ofer Prison after nearly twelve months of administrative detention based on a classified Israeli file. The Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs confirmed his death, noting he had no known medical issues before his arrest. A lawyer’s last five-minute visit two months earlier found him in good health, and a fellow inmate released shortly before his death reported the same.
Authorities informed his father of the death without giving a cause and requested consent for an autopsy, while the family fears the body could be withheld. Prisoner advocacy groups say his death brings the total of verified Palestinian detainee fatalities in Israeli custody to 92 since October 2023, and they allege a broader policy of systematic abuse. They also highlight that around 9,350 Palestinians remain imprisoned, including many held without trial.
