Palestinian writer Rasem Obeidat placed under six-month administrative detention

Israeli authorities have detained veteran Palestinian writer Rasem Obeidat for six months without charges, citing a secret file.

On 27 September, Israeli forces raided the residence of Rasem Obeidat, a prominent Palestinian writer, journalist and political analyst, in the Jabal al-Mukabber neighbourhood of occupied Jerusalem. Obeidat, aged 67, was detained and interrogated at the Moscovia detention centre. Without filing any charges, authorities issued a six-month administrative detention order on 29 September, relying on a classified file that has not been made public.

The measure bypasses a conventional trial and leaves Obeidat in custody without the opportunity to contest the allegations. The case highlights ongoing tensions over the use of administrative detention by Israeli officials against Palestinian figures.

Why it matters

The detention raises concerns about due process and the use of secret evidence against Palestinian activists.
