Palmares Resort Unveils 27-Hole Golf Haven with Award-Winning Clubhouse on Portugal’s Atlantic Coast

Palmares Ocean Living & Golf Resort, set in Portugal’s western Algarve between Lagos and Portimão, has become a premier golf destination with a 27-hole configuration split into three nine-hole loops—Alvor, Lagos and Praia—each showcasing different landscapes from parkland to rugged links beside the Atlantic. The course began as an 18-hole club designed by Frank Pennick in 1974 and was transformed in 2011 by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., who added a third loop and helped the resort win the World’s Best Golf Clubhouse award in 2025.

The Alvor loop skirts the Alvor Nature Reserve, Lagos advances toward the sea with a unique six-hole stretch lacking par-4s, and Praia offers a demanding, Scotland-like links experience with coastal winds and passing trains. Accommodations include the five-star Palmares Beach Hotel with up to 20 rooms, private pool and balcony views, as well as spacious apartments and a community pool overlooking the tenth hole. On-site dining is provided by three restaurants: a casual clubhouse venue, the Portuguese-centric Preceito, and the versatile 180º Restaurant. A JW Marriott hotel is under construction, expected to open in 2028, further enhancing the resort’s luxury offering.
