Panama Canal trims daily ship transits as El Niño drought deepens
Panama has declared a nationwide emergency as an El Niño-driven drought sharply lowers lake levels needed for lock operations. The Panama Canal Authority reduced the maximum daily ship limit from 36 to 32 in mid‑September and plans to keep the reduced figure in place. Minister for Canal Affairs Jose Ramon Ycaza said the budget is designed to maintain safe, continuous, efficient and profitable canal operations.
Rainfall from May to August is down 34% compared with historical averages, prompting additional water‑saving measures such as lowering the maximum draft for large vessels. The canal’s reduced capacity comes as the Hormuz crisis has shifted oil flows toward the Panama route.
