Panama declares emergency after 7.5-magnitude quake devastates multiple regions
Panama's government announced a state of emergency following a magnitude-7.5 earthquake that damaged homes, schools and public facilities across the country.
A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Panama on Friday at 12:56 local time, with its epicenter about 39 km northwest of Tonosi in Los Santos province. The tremor caused extensive damage to residential buildings, schools, health facilities, roads and other public structures nationwide. President Jose Raul Mulino instructed the formation of a dedicated committee to oversee aid distribution, resource management and community needs.
Juan Carlos Orillac, the minister of the presidency, explained that the emergency declaration ensures government agencies remain on standby and have the necessary funding. Donation collection points have been established at Omar Park in Panama City and at regional government offices. Emergency officials are still evaluating the full extent of the destruction and coordinating response actions.
Why it matters
