Papua New Guinea police confiscate semi-automatic rifles linked to global gun ring

Police in Port Moresby seized a cache of semi-automatic rifles and related equipment, tying the haul to an international firearms trafficking network.

Following tips from foreign agencies and a period of undercover monitoring, Papua New Guinea police executed search warrants at a residence in the Gerehu district of Port Moresby on 8 October. The operation uncovered a substantial stockpile of high-powered semi-automatic rifles, numerous components sufficient to assemble additional weapons, magazines, 3D-printing technology and other accessories used in firearm manufacturing.

Commissioner David Manning described the find as evidence of a transnational criminal syndicate exploiting the country to traffic illicit arms, which he said threatens community safety and national security. Investigators also seized documentary evidence linking the operation to legitimate import channels and international courier services. An adult male identified as a key coordinator of the smuggling network was detained and is awaiting charges.
