Paramount greenlights a film adaptation of CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077
Paramount is developing a movie based on the Cyberpunk 2077 video game, with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura attached and CD Projekt Red co-producing.
Paramount Pictures has confirmed that a cinematic version of the science-fiction game Cyberpunk 2077 is in development. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer behind the Transformers series, is attached to the project, while CD Projekt Red, the Polish studio that created the game, will serve as a co-producer. The narrative centers on V, a mercenary who merges with the digital persona of rock star-criminal Johnny Silverhand, a role that will be played by Keanu Reeves, as they confront the authoritarian megacorporation Arasaka in the neon-lit Night City.
Although the game’s 2020 release suffered performance issues, it ultimately achieved commercial success, moving 40 million units globally, and its recent expansion Phantom Liberty contributed an additional 15 million sales. The move follows a recent wave of video-game adaptations that have proven lucrative at the box office, such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Minecraft Movie. Paramount is also pursuing other game-based projects, including a Call of Duty film and a Street Fighter release slated for October 16.
Why it matters
The film shows how video-game franchises are becoming major sources for Hollywood blockbusters.
