Paramount Seeks to Retain Jon Stewart Amid Tensions with New Owner

Paramount is reportedly interested in keeping Jon Stewart on The Daily Show despite his strained relationship with owner David Ellison.

Paramount aims to retain Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, seeing his presence as vital for Comedy Central's relevance alongside South Park. Stewart's current contract expires at the end of the year, and the network has not yet announced whether he will sign a new deal, a pattern similar to his previous extensions announced in November 2025 and October 2024. Stewart has expressed a philosophy of staying and contesting decisions rather than leaving, despite his displeasure with owner David Ellison, who acquired Paramount last August.

He previously criticized the cancellation of Late Night with Stephen Colbert and warned about potential changes at one outlet under Ellison's influence. Nonetheless, Stewart acknowledges that his show’s ratings boost makes his continued involvement advantageous for the network.

Why it matters

Stewart's future affects Comedy Central's flagship programming and Paramount's strategy in a streaming-focused market.
