Parents face charges for permitting children to ride illegal high-speed e-scooters

Several adults, mainly parents, have been charged with allowing minors under 15 to use e-scooters that exceed legal speed and power limits.

Prosecutors have filed charges against a number of adults for letting children under 15 operate e-scooters that are too fast and powerful. In many cases, the scooters reached speeds between 50 and 60 kilometres per hour. Swedish law does not set an age limit for e-scooter use, but devices faster than 20 km/h or above 250 watts are classified as motor-driven vehicles, not as e-scooters. The charges stem from parents purchasing such models for their children.

Why it matters

The case underscores safety risks and legal gaps surrounding powerful e-scooters used by minors in Sweden.
