Parents force entry onto California school bus as children escape through windows

A school bus traveling along Highway 49 in Calaveras County became the scene of a chaotic standoff when the driver kept the vehicle stopped for roughly an hour, refusing to release the children. Frustrated parents arrived after their kids called them from the bus; some forced their way inside through windows, and a number of students also used the windows as makeshift exits. One parent was later arrested after allegedly smashing the bus door, an act the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office classified as vandalism.

Superintendent Kassie Meeks said the incident began over concerns about student behavior and required police intervention. Deputies warned that windows should only be used as emergency exits and reiterated the importance of adhering to school bus safety regulations. The episode highlighted tensions between parents and school transportation staff in the district.
